Crustal thinkness across the Grenville Province and northern Appalachians in New England and adjacent areas
Abstract
Seismic refraction data collected from the 1984 MSRP and 1988 O-NYNEX experiments are used to construct a contour map of the Moho depth in New England area by applying the normal moveout method. The contour map shows that the crust thickens from 34 $\pm$ 1 km near the coast of Maine to 39 $\pm$ 1 in Vermont. The change in Moho character is related to the tectonic history of the crust. The sharp Moho in Appalachian area indicates that the crust in this area was shaped by ductile shear and recrystallization during Mesozoic extension, whereas the gradational Moho beneath the Grenville Province may have been formed earlier in Proterozoic time due to continent-continent collisions or to hot felsic intrusions.
